This study confirmed that the AliveCor (Kardia) electrocardiography device was very effective at obtaining diagnostic ECGs in horses after racing. This simple device is a single lead bipolar ECG that is placed over the left thorax above and behind the elbow. The authors used ultrasound gel to improve contact, but this is usually not necessary. The basic (and older generation) analytical software was not very good at calculating HR or differentiating a normal heart rhythm from atrial fibrillation, but the advanced software was more reliable. The authors highlighted the importance of emailing the trace to someone trained in interpreting ECGs in horses.
